Robin Fox (Australia)
The Giant Theremin, 2011

Following on the theremin varieties… Fox’s version is more emulating theremin, with camera scaring the environment and computer generating sounds on the basis of the camera feed, algorithm and sound library. But nevertheless, I like it being a sculptural piece that responds to movements of the people around it with sound. It is also pretty cool that its construction is quite solid, allowing for interaction even with acrobatic bikers… It’s ability to identify multiple passers-by at the same time and providing individual response to each is also interesting, facilitating interesting group activities – be it dance groups or tai chi practitioners.

This is clearly out of my league for the time being, but as an inspiring conceptual predecessor it is still most relevant to have on the list.
