Pearla Pigao (b. 1984, Norway)
Sinus, 2017
This is soooo good! Pigao is a musician who has branched out into the crafty side of the visual art. She weaves textiles using metallic thread and turns them into peculiar theremins.
This kind of project succeeds in combining so many of my interests that I barely know from which end to start listing them:
Textiles – I’ve been partial to those since I was a kid and my contemporary explorations involved metallic thread as key component;
Sound – I am exploring sound sculpture for the time being, looking for productive ways to combine solid objects with sound generation or reproduction ability;
Interactivity – Pigao’s pieces sound when audience approaches them, and I am always interested in ways to trigger audience interaction, letting the audience to complete or to develop the piece and its experience and meaning generation.
I cannot fully decide what I think about the relative minimalism of form. To some extent I appreciate it being totally fuzz-free, but it may also leaving me wanting for more…
