Harold Garfinkel (b. 1917, USA – d. 2011, USA)
Garfinkeling, 1967-

OK, the formal term is “breaching experiment”, but it is so associated with Garfinkel that one can find garfinkeling even in methodological literature of social sciences. It refers to a deliberate violation of social norms as a means to expose and/or explore their unquestioned “givenness” as constructed.

I keep doing it all the time. It does not necessarily render me many friends, but I find it to be a very effective tool for exploration of sensemaking. Violation of a norm is bound to wake the counterparty up from their routine behaviour and try to figure out the situation and most appropriate response to it. Presenting a work, but declining to specify what that work is – as I did in “Find The Art Piece” – is a good example.
