Vito Acconci (b. 1940, USA – d. 2017, USA)
Seedbed, 1972

I did not see this entering my blog. The piquant part of the work has no direct relevance for me. But if I disregard that, the whole setup becomes truly pertinent. What’s on display here? Visually – kind of nothing. Oddly sloping floor and a speaker in the corner. Aurally – artist’s voice and, possibly, some sounds of his body moving under the flooring. The most intriguing part is hidden yet manifested through sound. Strangely it turns out to be pretty similar to my strategy in “Too Little Too Much” where key object – painting – is only mentioned in the title, but direct access is denied, only its derivatives are offered.
