Ian Davenport (b. 1966, UK)
Cascade, Toronto, 2019

Pertinence to my work? It resembles some of my sound pieces, in particular based on recordings stretched out in time or on drone pitch variations. It also relates to my exploration of colour – be it in Colour Photographs (blurred until colour fields remain the only elements of the motif), listings of conceptual hues, colour-based assortment of photographs or yellow dances. But also to my preference to “collaborate” with my materials – I quite like that after Davenport gives the starting point, rest of the painting is done by the paint itself, guided by gravity and surface tension. So overall it plugs nicely into my mental structures resembling various patterns I use even if they have not been rendering anything like this visually so far.

At the same time I cannot help wondering – is he still enjoying each instance of this process just as much as he must have once he started, or has it become a safe conveyer-line job making “more Davenports” to meet the demand? Also, if there is any traceable connection to Paul Smith fashion – Mrs Google was unable to get it sorted for me…

PS I almost forgot, I like that he can do this straight onto the wall, too… directly responding and interacting with the site…
