Mary Heilmann (b. 1940, USA)

So, Heilmann designs her own chairs that she places in the gallery along with her paintings. Chair re-shapes the body of the sitter, allows body-contact with artist’s work while looking at the paintings, extends the two-dimensional plane of the painting into colourful three-dimensional objects in space. This adds to my collection of ideas for how to stage encounters with the works that transcend a single medium or “traditional” behavioural pattern in such an encounter. A rather simple gesture, nothing too outlandish, but appears to be truly interesting.
