Mira Schendel (b. 1919, Switzerland – d. 1988, Brazil)
Sarrafo, 1987

Among my many ideas for how categories could be challenged was paying special attention to their boundaries. In the painting world that would correspond to the frame (also discussed by Derrida in Parergon) that could easily be displaced or subverted. So I was playing with ideas of presenting the frame at the centre of the canvas, for example. But I was suspected that it must have been done decades ago as most of my new ideas. I am not sure if Schendel was aiming for the same thing, but visually it is pretty close. Thus I had to file it for possible future reference.
