Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929, Japan)
Infinity Nets [XSHTQ], 2017
This may be odd, but I do relate Kusama’s Infinity Nets paintings to my dotted paintings. It’s a bit of a negative here – she is painting the actual strands of the net, I am making the dots, a kind of opposite of that. But there is some occasional visual affinity even if my stuff is not even nearly as sophisticated or well executed as hers. But there is something about spatiality appearing out of nowhere, eyes being tricked to follow the lines, to reinterpret shifting sizes as shifts in distance… which must be an acquired way of seeing perspectival drawings… apart from the space there is also some dynamics, perhaps the same slide of the eye along the lines that makes it… but whatever it is, it is interesting… there is nothing in particular to look at, no obvious “centre piece” and yet, while sliding around, looking for it, trying to take in whatever that makes itself available, I am entertained, I am having quite a durational experience, like listening to the music…
