Jason Brooks (b. 1969, UK)
Harewood Castle Self-portrait, 2001

The mix of the genre (and, arguably, media) is quite fun here – landscape painting and photographic selfie rendered as a painting of one reflecting on another.

I’ve been doing quite a few reflected selfies myself, just as explorations of various reflective surfaces at large.

A particularly interesting element here is metaphorical consideration of relationship between the artist and their work. I’ve been playing around with different strategies to sever or at least weaken that link, not willing my works to be perceived as a window into me. Here Brooks complicates that – he places himself into his painting, but in such a way that he could be assumed standing next to me, appreciating the same landscape painting… Truly interesting and thought provoking.
