An interesting overview of artistic practices using microphones and loudspeakers as musical instruments. I am experimenting more and more with “sound sculpture” and “sound installations”, especially in terms of having sculptural objects or spaces equipped with mics and/or speakers, so this book was very handy to come across.

Another interesting aspect is that it is based on a PhD dissertation – and it shows. There are clear attempts to “make a contribution” by introducing various taxonomies and diagrammatic analysis of artworks – that certainly are grounded and logical, but perhaps were not as interesting for me as the proportion of the book allocated to them. As I am seriously considering a PhD as my next step, it is valuable to see what projects in the field have been done and what their outcomes may be like.
