Leo Steinberg (b. 1920, Russia – d. 2011, USA)
Other Criteria, 1972

This may seem a bit paradoxical and I will need to work with his texts a little bit more. My own work is not about me, so I am quite disinterested in the audience (or critics) treating it as a window into me. And Steinberg, as opposed to Greenberg, does not ignore the author. But he does not seem to engage into author’s psychoanalysis either, so it might be ok.

Anyway, one of the main reasons he ended up here is for his way to approach and appreciate even the kind of art he does not like or understand. I often find myself spending time assessing “what in there may be worth appreciation” when encountering works that “do not do it for me”. And Steinberg is helpful there.
