Diego Velázquez (b. 1599, Spain – d. 1660, Spain)
Las Meninas, 1656

The painting came to my attention via Foucault’s analytical account of it. By outlining multiple perspectives, explicit and implicit relations between the characters depicted and assumed, he showed me a mode of interaction with a painting – as well as the conceptual work that must have gone into its making – that has radically changed my understanding of this medium.

It served as a strong impetus for me to take up painting as an element in my artistic practice.
