Madeline Hollander (b. 1986, USA)
Firehose Scores, 2017

Retired firehoses arranged on the ground as invitation to the viewers to respond! Hollander’s interest for intersections between visual arts and dance choreography is most inspiring.

I have worked in related intersections myself, but have not thought of them in terms of dance yet – something that I am likely to consider in the future. Although I could re-interpret some of my earlier works that way as well. In “Find The Art Piece” audience moved around the room looking for “my art” – which could certainly have been considered in terms of choreographic response to my challenge as a score. In “Anticipation Piece” audience was interacting with egg timers provided – and that interaction was involving body movements as well as the sonic component of the ticking timers, some of the participants testing also what other sounds the timers could make. The audience was seated in office chairs on wheels, which meant that some of them were very stationary, while others were making use of the wheels available to them. I did not think of it at the time, but there is nothing to prevent me from considering people moving in chairs and on chairs as a form of dance – the bodies are moving and those moves may be appreciated.
