Andrea Fraser (b. 1965, USA)

Fraser’s work is typically classified as institutional critique. That’s all good. But I see also other aspects that in my view deserve appreciation. It is not totally unusual to come across docents and guides that provide rather idiosyncratic narratives – be it thematic or based on own special area of interest or on assumptions about audience’s simplistic interests and attention span. It is only worth critique when your interests and agendas do not match. And people are different. So while appreciating some critical content, I also find it interesting as an example of a variety of narratives that can be triggered or generated by the same collection or environment.

This relates to a number of my projects driven by idiosyncratic curation – like Colaborations or I Made This or Rererepresentations.
