Pauline Oliveros (b. 1932, USA – d. 2016, USA)
Sonic Meditations, 1974

Oliveros’ sonic meditations remind me of Yoko Ono’s instruction paintings. However, they are much more realisable and intended to be actually practiced in order to gain heightened states of awareness – emphasis being on the meditation part.

In my practice it relates to score-based situation works (e.g. “Anticipation Piece” where the audience is asked to set their egg timers to given period of time and wait for them to go off). I did not think of them in terms of heightened awareness, but I think that it tends to be a quite likely side-effect.
