Thomas Lehnerer (b. 1955, Germany – d. 1995)
Methode der Kunst, 1993

Lehnerer was combining his artistic practice with theoretical work, which may be a mix I am gravitating towards myself.

In his “Methods of Art” his “central focus is the preservation of freedom in the field of tension between thinking, feeling and contextual contingency” (Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein exhibition leaflet) and that resonates well with my own thinking.

“…art’s own self-justification is unsure. Artists have to rely on themselves and have to establish a self-understanding for their work…” (ibid.)

“When the artist has no generally valid principles, no religion, he has to try to create them in his own thought. He must, in order to work as an artist, provide himself and his art with a specifically ‘artistic’ meaning. He has the liberty” (ibid.)

Amen!
